California Boho Style Airbnb House

Have you suddenly had the itch to hang a basket on your wall? California-inspired bohemian modern decor is coming on strong these days. My family of three traveled west to Summerland, California, near Santa Barbara, earlier this summer and stayed in the MOST lovely Airbnb. It perfectly illustrated the sweet simplicity of California boho style.
This was our first trip with our daughter who was nine months at the time, and we vowed to stay somewhere so pretty that we didn't resent our baby when we had to be in the house at an early bedtime. It is very important not to be mad at your adorable baby while trying to relax on vacation. And look just how lovely our home away from home was!
We are knee-deep in work this fall, and my heart is longing a bit for the respite that California was for us. Just what about this little house made it so special, besides the proximity to the wide, wild, inspiring ocean? And what elements could be brought back home?
Nature + Minimalism
I think the biggest appeal of this space for me is the minimalistic approach–no more furniture than is needed. Just enough details. Enough blank space and room to sigh. Places to rest our tired eyes. A huge emphasis on the beautiful views of God's great earth outside. Why hang a lot of artwork when you could narrow focus to a giant picture window filled with lush plants and a wink of the sea?
Comfort and purpose is key
I love a room where you know exactly what to do in it. Obviously in this room you lounge on that big sofa. There is something earthy and homey about the pieces in this space. They aren't all the hippest elements that ever existed, but they are neutral, simple, and do the trick.
Atomic Elements Add a Jazzy touch
I really like how our vacation home had some very atomic elements, like the vintage fireplace and the Dragon Tree, nature's starburst. These and the classic 1950s kitchen really speak to California's popularity as a destination during that era. These pieces are super energizing without breaking with the laid-back, vacation vibes of the rest of the home.
Even babies are drawn to what matters most–the simple, grand beauty of nature. Harriet looked out this window for long moments every day.
Did I mention hanging a basket on the wall already?
At a time when life can so easily be go, go, going, I found the light-handed wall decor and furniture to be a visual pleasure. I actually came home and took a lot of artwork down. And hung a basket on the wall. Woven pieces add a natural, easy tone.
Midcentury clock plus a woven wall-hanging. There's an energy to these pairings. Vibrant and relaxed, chic and comfortable.

Controlled Color Palette
There is some mega-restraint in this bedroom. It has a cranberry and beige theme. The strict adherence to minimalism in palette lets functionality of pieces prevail respectfully. Put simply, I don't love this bedspread or the lamp, but I'm left feeling the room is complete because of careful color coordination. You don't have to spend a mint to get a finished look; you can use techniques like this.
Pink is the New White
My sweet hubs says pink is the new "It" color. We really loved this fresh, blushing kitchen paired with vintage, earthly elements. And, again, a view of the ocean doesn't hurt. Shhh...we think we may add a splash of rose to our kitchen soon, and I can't wait.
I liked this photo. It was the only one I saw in the house. It feels like a good memory even though I wasn't there and don't know who that is.
I only want to stay in beautiful structures and accommodations from here on. Living in a well-planned home makes life so much more calm and uplifting, of course that is true of vacation homes. We had a simple, comforting space to truly relax and make family memories in, and for that I am so thankful.
