The other day I was going on and on about how I'm decorating my home for fall. "We should do fall home tours!" I told Daly. I asked her how she decorated for the season and she said she didn't. What?! No pumpkins? Now that I think about it, it makes sense she doesn't. This is a girl who impressively limits her Christmas decorations to one box. However, we found it quite humorous that we have such different takes on decorating our homes for the season, so we thought we'd share both approaches. Palmer's obsession with pumpkins and Daly's indifference. Enjoy!

Decorating my home for fall: Palmer

Oh man, I do love the fall season. The cooler weather, the warm drinks, the beautiful autumn leaves. I even love the creepiness of Halloween (horror movies, trick-or-treating, jack-o-lanterns!). In honor of a season that is definitely in the top half of seasons in my book (sorry winter and summer), I put together a little fall home tour to share how I've spruced up my abode for the next three months.

I spotted my first pumpkin at the Tulsa Farmer's Market on September 16th. I bought four, took two to the shop and two to my home. I didn't want to be greedy with the fall decor just yet. I then saw more pumpkins at Trader Joe's five days later and bought several small ones. I like the small ones because 1) they are cheap and 2) they can fit in unsuspecting places (like inside a glass dome). I will probably add a couple more pumpkins over the next month. Probably something larger for the front porch that we can carve.

For the purposes of this home tour, I brought out my cozy, chunky knit fall blanket made by my friend Tasha of House Sparrow Fine Nesting. I truly do use this blanket, but it still feels like summer here in OK, hence the "staging" for the tour.

My mom bought this vintage autumn landscape at a Missouri auction, and I took it from her (she said she didn't mind). I hung it front and center in my dining room right now, but will probably move it to my mudroom gallery wall once winter comes. I love how it's like looking out a tiny window at pretty autumn trees.

Next, I added dried flowers to the dining table. I think they have a semi-interesting back story that I'm going to tell you. I bought them at the store for a few bucks from a lady who has a whole closet full of them. Her friend had stocked up on all of these flowers a few years ago with the intention of selling them in an antique mall, but then she moved and couldn't take them so she unloaded them on this nice lady. So they've been in this lady's home for a couple years just hanging out and drying out. Maybe I should buy them all from her and have them available at the store. Would you guys want a pretty dried autumn bouquet?

I was walking through a fabric store a few days ago and became obsessed with the plaid flannels as I passed them. I really wanted to buy some because it was so beautiful and fallish, but couldn't think of a reason why. Then I had a bright idea to sew a small table runner. I bought 1/3 a yard (a whopping $2!) and then when I got it home I decided I didn't even need to bother sewing it. It was perfect as is. My new fall table runner brings in the colors of my home in a warm and cozy way.

Lastly, porch mums. I got some!

Why I don't decorate for fall: Daly

Now for those of you who don't decorate. Never fear. The other half of our Ashley team doesn't decorate either and here's why: I am lazy and anxious. If I decorate, I have to un-decorate. I sound like the Scrooge of Autumn, but I love fall as much as the other Ashley. We both got married in the fall. I open my windows to the cool air. I got some porch mums, dammit. I drink hot coffee and tea and pick up beautiful fall leaves. I am a cluttered person though, and decorating often just feels like adding on top of my slovenliness. All that said, maybe I'll get my holiday box down and see what Halloween I have in there. Or maybe I will just visit Palmer's house to get my fall decor fix. It's ok to be whoever we want to be when it comes to holiday decor. Right? Tell me it's ok.
